THE FACE NEARER TO MY HEART: SATIS SHROFF

The person Satis Shroff has various faces, of a singer, author, poet, medical lecturer, artist. Which face is near to your heart?     I like writing which means sitting down and typing what you’ve thought about. Writing is a solitary performance but when I sing with my croonies of the MGV-Kappel it is sharing our joy and sadness and it’s a collective song that we produce and that makes our hearts beat higher during concerts.   When an idea moves me for days I have the craving to pen it. I get ideas when I’m ironing clothes and listening to Nepali songs or Bollywood ones. When I don’t have time, I make a poem out of it, for poetry is emotion recollected in tranquillity. When I prepare my medical lectures I’m transferring knowledge from my university past and bringing them together verbally, and I realise it’s great fun to attain topicality by connecting the medical themes with what’s topical thereby creating a bridge between the two. That makes a lecture int...
ETTENBÜHL:  AN ENGLISH GARDEN IN GERMANY (SATIS SHROFF) Forty years ago Ettenbühl was a tract of agricultural land with meadows. It was turned into a five hectar English landscape and has now 26 garden space with over 100 special wood, thousands of roses and flowery bushes. It all began in 1975 as a private garden. In 1998 Gisela Seidel and her daughter Stephanie Körner decided to take the challenge and make something special out of Ettenbühl, a sleepy hamlet. That was the beginning of Landhaus Ettenbühl in 1999. An English garden without a native gardener? In the year 2000 a genuine English gardener and rose specialist named  John Scarman joined the team and he stayed till 2012. The landhouse grew and a restaurant, café and a gardening school added. Today, you have visitors from Switzerland, Germany and Alsace (France). You can saunter along Granny’s Walk, which has lovely roses, past the very English restaurant and café, and along the Yellow Brick Road. The tall Leyla...

WHEN THE SOUL LEAVES (Satis Shroff)

Bild
WHEN THE SOUL LEAVES (Satis Shroff) Like Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage' And we've played many different roles in our lives In various places and scenarios. As we grow old and ripe, our knowledge of the world grows. We hold what we cannot see, smell, taste and touch in our memories. We only have to walk down memory lane To find the countless faces, places, sights and sounds that we have stored, To be recalled and retrieved through association In conversations with others Or when we contemplate alone. Why should elderly people be scared of social terror and aging? Aging is a biological phenomenon. We should be glad that we have lived useful lives, Filled with good experiences. The wonderful children that we have created, The very gems of our genes, Each so individual in their personalities. The house we lived in and filled With love, laughter, songs and music. The parents and grand-parents, friends and relatives We have had the time to share with. But we sh...

THE NAKED HILLS (Satis Shroff)

Bild
THE NAKED HILLS (Satis Shroff) A young Nepalese woman Sits in front of her parents’ thatched home In the Middle Hills of Nepal. Her two hands caress her shoulders. It’s cold in the hills of Nepal, Where the hills are naked And its sons have left In search of better pastures, For the hills are barren. Governments and kings Have come and gone, But the poverty has remained. There’s no flour to bake one’s bread. The mothers seek and pluck Brennessel, And call it sisnu, To make a soup In the frugal hills of Nepal. In Maghey Sankrati we eat Stems and roots, Tarul and sweet-potatoes. There’s no wheat, maize, rice or mustard In these naked hills. Everything has become bitter. What remains is love and attachment. A Nepalese bird still sings: Kafal pakyo. Kafal pakyo. The berry’s ripe Glossary: Brennessel (Ger.): sisnu (Nepali), stinging nettle Maghey Sankrati: festival in Nepal pic courtesy:...
