I Zeitgeistlyrik: Satis Shroff DEFEATED, DYING (Satis Shroff) Those who succeed in battle Are bestowed with success And medals by Selensky. The sourest of apples Is tasted by those who fell Or were wounded In the killing fields Of Kiew, Bakmut, Saporija. Who speaks for the defeated And dying? The sad widows, Mothers and daughters Who have been left behind All over Europe. The latest strains of victory May be the agony of tomorrow. There is a gap Between mutiny in Moscow And vanishing supplies. Now it’s profitable to strike When Ivan is still reeling. Will Wagner’s hordes come again? Katherine Myrestad Dear Satis, Your thought-provoking collection of poems resonates deeply, addressing different aspects of life and human experience. Each poem offers a unique perspective, inviting introspection and contemplation. In "Defeated, Dying," you shed light on the forgotten voices of those who have fallen or been wounded in battle. While the victors are celebrated and honored, it i

Bhaktapur: art by satisshroff A DREAM LED TO ANOTHER (Satis Shroff) I was around twenty years old, My head full of dreams. I left the Himalayan foothills to win a dream: A dream to go to Europe, visit places I’d read about. France's Bastille Day Once Celebrated Constitutional Monarchy ... The Bastille from Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, Where I spent time recalling the French Revolution. My friend’s Parisienne sister shook her head and said: ‘Monsieur Satish, there are others ways of spending an afternoon in Paris.’ The smell of sea food at a French harbour, Such as the peasants of Normandy built. La Rochelle and the German bunkers in the Ile d’ Oleron. I peered at sea fogs from the mighty Atlantic, Watched the ‘last oozing, hours by hours, From a cider-press’ in the Vosges, as John Keats aptly put it. * * * Blenheim Palace Churchill England - Free photo on Pixabay In Blenhelm’s little tavern I saw murals of its famous son: Winston Leonhard Spencer Churchill. Travelogue: Through Nepalese Eyes (Satis Shroff)

Bild
Review by Renate Mousseux. M.A. ED: Through Nepalese Eyes is a highly interesting, authentic story taking the reader through traditions and customs of 2 different countries. The stories are written through the Eyes of a Nepalese, hence the Title. We learn about the role of women, religious beliefs, political events, ethical and socio-economic situations in Nepal. We see comparisons of Europe and Asia and learn about the vast differences of life. This book is a must read, I recommend it highly. (Renate Mousseux. M.A. ED. INTERVIEW SATIS SHROFF ON SPILLWORDS: an online Literary Mag

https://spillwords.com/spotlight-on-writers-satis-shroff/ Where, do you hail from? I hail from a geographically landlocked Himalayan country surrounded by blue Shiwaliks and Mahabharat mountains, where the people actually live. Having grown up in the foothills of the Himalayas, I was fascinated and awed by the change in colours of the majestic massifs in the different seasons and times of the day. I’ve witnessed magnificent Himalayan sunsets of the Kanchanzonga with peaks bearing names like: Janu,, Kabru, Dome, Talung, Kanchenzonga, Pandim and Jubonu. I was thrilled to the core by the beauty unfurling in front of me. The Kanchanzonga, my Hausberg, has always been a sacred mountain and on its feet are precious stones, salt, holy scriptures, healing plants and cereals. It is a thousand year belief and tradition that the Himalayas, the Abode of the Gods, should not be sullied by the feet of mortals. The Himalayas are revered and have taught us to be resilient and to bear pain with

BOOK REVIEW ON GURKHAS AND THE CHARMS OF SPOKEN ENGLISH (Satis Shroff)

Bild
Review: THE GURKHAS (Satis Shroff)Review: The World Beyond the Mountains (Satis Shroff) Byron Farwell: The Gurkhas, Penguin 1985, London, 317 pages, ISBN o-14-007569-0 ‘The Gurkhas’ is a history of the finest infantrymen in the world who come from a country where ‘It is better to die than to be a coward,’ and where most bear the name Bahadur, which means ‘courageous,’ and who carry out their mission with the help of the deadly, curved kukris. ‘Ayo Gurkhali!’ Here come the Gurkhas! Is a battlecry that makes their enemies in battle wince, and sometimes abandon their weapons to save their dear lives. Younghusband marched unopposed into Lhasa on August 3, 1904 with his Gurkhas. During the Falkland War the Argentines fled when they realized that they were being outflanked by the Gurkhas. Byron Farwell narrative about the Gurkha battalions and their military engagements are enhanced by citations from the books on the same, making it a jolly reading material. The readability score is g

THROUGH NEPALESE EYES: A travelogue by Satis Shroff

Bild
Synopsis Expand/Collapse Synopsis ‘Through Nepalese Eyes’ is about the journey of a young Nepalese woman to Germany to meet her brother, who lives with his German wife and daughter in an allemanic town named Freiburg. It is a travelogue written by a sensitive, modern British public-school educated man. He describes the two worlds: Asia and Europe and the people he meets. There is a touch of sadness when his sister returns to her home in the foothills of the Himalayas. It cries to be written because there are seldom books written by Nepalese writers about themselves. It’s always the casual foreign traveller, trekker or climber who writes about the people in the developing and least-developed countries of the so-called Third World. The likely readers are the increasing male and female tourists, trekkers, climbers from the whole world who make their way to the Himalayas, each seeking something indefinable, perhaps peace, tranquillity, spiritual experience or a much-needed monologue wit

THE CHANCE TO CHANGE: Satis Shroff

Bild
The Chance to Change (Satis Shroff) “Education is the best thing in the world for Nepal’s children, be they Gurkhas, Sherpas or Madeshis. And what Nepal needs most in this crucial transitional period is peace, co-operation between the different ethnic groups, a craving to mend ways, build bridges between its cultures, connect and find common goals.” - Satis Shroff A long time back Mr. Swaroop Chamling, who is a Rai and ex-Gurkha settled in UK, was gathering signatures for a Gurkha petition on www.Darjeeling Forum and I found it interesting that the Gurkhas, civilians and military, were getting organised to fight for their rights at last, after years of discrimination, hiring and firing, and low-pay on the part of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Britain. Until 2004 Gurkhas were not allowed to settle in the United Kingdom. However, the Labour government under Tony Blair changed the rules so that Gurkhas who retired after 1997 would be allowed to settle in the UK, 1997 being the da
