THE GOOD IN HUMANS (Satis Shroff) Salez is not forgotten, Another act of terror, This time in a Swiss train. Is it safe to travel, To leave your flat? Have we lost faith in humanity? The answer is: no. Most people are good, It’s only a few, fanatic terrorists, Ignored and ridiculed by society, Isolated and turned psychotic. In the last World Wars 65 million people Lost their lives. Alas, violence has always been with us, Even in times of peace, At homes and killing fields. Shall we build walls of barbed wire again And imprison ourselves? We are the lovers of freedom, And want to live our lives, The way we’ve done All these years. Defying the invisible evil that surrounds us, Trusting the good in humans, For hope lingers with us. * * *

Only constantly rising mists And grey clouds that veiled the Matterhorn.’ They hadn’t bothered doing any trekking In the Swiss countryside. * * * AH, THE SAUNA (Satis Shroff) The sauna and the whirlpool Were good for my tired feet And calf muscles. An splendid compensation, Chillaxing  In the bubbling whirlpool Thereafter. The hotel’s noisy with visitors Yet a serene and tranquil sauna, For the people of Nippon  Don’t like saunas and whirlpools  In the evenings. * * * THE YOUNG MAN FROM NIPPON (Satis Shroff) I remember we had a young man from Japan Who learned German and played soccer At the local sport club in Kappel. A NEPALESE PERSPECTIVE (Satis Shroff)

A Flight to the Snows  (Satis Shroff, Freiburg) “Will the passengers please fasten their seat belts,” said a soft voice over the intercom. And I slid one end of the belt into the heavy metallic slot, sat back, and peered through the window of the Royal Nepal jet. The runway was clear and there was an Airbus 310, three Russian-made helicopters and a Dornier- aircraft near the control tower of the Tribhuvan Airport. Some people waved from the tower. It was one of those early-morning mountain flights that are run ‘provided-the-weather-is-good’ as they say in tourist-brochures. My seat was right near the port wing and I could get a fairly good view of the engines coming noisily to life. The jet taxied lazily down the southern end of the runway, swerved around and sped towards the north gathering momentum till I could finally feel a hollow in my stomach. We were airborne. It was a steep climb and the blue mountain front was looming close. You could even spot the trees growing on
