Safeguarding Peace Between Nepal and India (Satis Shroff)

SAFEGUARDING PEACE BETWEEN INDIA & NEPAL (Satis Shroff) (Aquarelle(c)satisshroff) The British, French, German, Austrian and American government should be urged to safeguard peace between India and Nepal, and not to block the flow of traffic and good from India to Nepal, and vice versa. The Blockade on the Indian side has precipitated a humanitarian crisis in the Himalayan country, which is landlocked, surrounded by China and India. PM Modi has been trying to ignore the Indo-Nepalese issue as an ‘internal’ Nepalese affair, and he does not see the far-reaching implications of his indifference towards Nepal.  The Indian blockade encourages the Maoists to develop closer ties with the other big northern neighbour: China. Perhaps the China card will enable Nepal to be more developed with the help of the Chinese than by the Indians in the south, who even though they have close cultural ties with Nepal, refrain from opening their eyes and insist on a so-called 'internal'

(Nepalese folk-dance performed by the FNA in Freiburg)            NEPAL : Let us Live in Peace, despite the Differences (Satis Shroff) India and Nepal have such a lot in common: the Devnagari script, Hinduism and Buddhism, the Nepali/Gorkhali language, culture, both have a British colonial past. India was ruled by the British but Nepal sent its soldiers to fight under the British flag. The Gorkhas are India’s elite troops. There are so many Indians doing business in Nepal and numerous Nepalese working in the Indian subcontinent. It is possible to live together, despite our ethnic differences. We worship the same Gods and do the same Hindu and Buddhist rituals. We love Indian classical music, Bollywood and our Himalayan folkmusic. We all speak the same English language albeit with Indian and Nepalese accents. India lost the sino-indo war in 1962 but it won the wars in Kutch and East Pakistan in which the Gorkha regiments play important roles. Due to our common religion we

Volkstrauertag (Satis Shroff) Wreaths for the fallen soldiers, Speeches for those who didn’t return To their mothers, wives and children. Germans show gratitude and humanity, A welcome culture for refugees; Others ignite asylum homes. Every year on Volkstrauertag (Memorial Day) we go to the graveyard in Germany, and we think and pray together for the victims of World War I and World War II, and about the misery, sadness and holocaust. We think about the victims of persecution from the past and present. And dwell upon how valuable freedom and peace are to the well-being of all people in this world. In a town like Freiburg we still dig up bombs that didn’t detonate, bombs that were dropped by the USAF and the Royal Air Force. Freiburg was razed to the ground in those days. Civilians were killed or burnt in the very bunkers they sought refuge in. In this context, we also have to think of the damage done to London and other cities around Europe by the Luft

Archiv für Zeitgeschichte ETH Zürich/Elsbeth-Kasser-Stiftung 'Ceux de Gurs' : art by Max Lingner The place was the Mecklenburg Hall of the Sparkasse in Freiburg. On exhibit were 40 sketches, portraits, water-colour paintings, landscape drawings and greeting cards. The art work was done by the Jewish prisoners of  concentration camp in Gurs (France).  I was so moved by the artistic works of the prisoners that I couldn’t resist the temptation of writing my thoughts in the visitor’s book. What did the prisoners do during the day? They were forced to do nothing. Did they suffer from hunger, cold, fear? How did the emaciated mothers and
