FEATHERED FRIENDS ( Satis Shroff ) A pair of binocs and patience Is all you need. Watching our feathered friends In the garden or the Black Forest. Hush! A steglitz with red and white feathers, Has just come by. Some pigeons have left Freiburg And roost on the pine trees, In the urban outskirts. The blaumeise is a frequent guest, With its black streak across the eyes, And the blue feathered cap it wears. Yesterday was sunny And a robin took a speedy bath, On the stone pool, Ever on guard, Lest it be surprised, By a curious jay or a prowling cat. Now and then you hear the zaunkönig, Europe’s smallest bird, Trilling out loud, Grabbing everyone’s attention. But in the evening, When the sun goes down, It’s time for the loveliest melodies, Sung by the blackbird, From my neighbour’s rooftop. Come with me to the town hall of Lausanne, Which is an imposing 18th century building. The roof recalls the rich homes Of wealthy Swiss landowners from the region.

Satis Shroff Freiburg_Kappel , Germany Satis Shroff is  a prolific German writer and poet and received the Neruda Award 2017 in Crispiano, Italy. He is a published writer, poet and lecturer based in Freiburg (poems, fiction, non-fiction) who also writes on ethno-medical, culture-ethnological themes. He has studied Zoology and Botany in Nepal, Medicine and Social Science in Germany and Creative Writing in Freiburg and Manchester. He describes himself as a mediator between western and eastern cultures and sees his future as a writer and poet. Satis Shroff was awarded the German Academic Exchange Prize. He is a lecturer in Basle (Switzerland), at the Akademie für medizinische Berufe (Uniklinik Freiburg)and the VHS, Freiburg. He was awarded a Culture Prize by Green City Freiburg for his social engagement with the asylum seekers and refugees, and also nominated for the German Social Engagement Prize. He sings German and English songs in a men’s choir (mgv-Kappel) in Freiburg.

Angst and Religion (Satis Shroff) After Arundhati Roy’s ‚God of Small Things,’ Kiran Nagarkar, an author from Mumbai, came up with ‚God’s Smaller Warriors,’ which didn’t make it to the Man Booker Prize. Nagarkar’s book is about a protagonist named Zia Khan and his brother Amanat. Even though Zia changes his religion a couple of times, he remains an extremist at heart. The story deals with extremism in this era of globalisation, using a Bollywood screenplay with dancers from this Schwarzwald metropolis and eight actors. Zia is depicted as a gifted mathematician who changes not only religions, but also continents to study in an elite English university, then as a radical Islamist and a fiery Catholic who’s against abortion in the USA.
