National Socialism in Freiburg (Satis Shroff) Subtitle: Deported Souls on the Blue Bridge In 1933 the national Socialists overtook power in the town council of Freiburg. At the beginning the people of Freiburg were cheering in the streets, according to an exhibition with the title ‘National Socialism in Freiburg.’ Jewish Refugees arrive in Gurs Camp (Southern France) Adolf Hitler Strasse:   The picture shows the Freiburger citizens admiring the Nazi as they pass along the Kaiser Joseph Strasse ( which was then named Adolf Hitler Strasse). You can see the olde Cafe & Konditorei Steinmetz where I used to buy my chocolates. Today, we have a Green Oberbürgermeister named Dieter Salomon and the town is an open, democratic town with university students from all over the world. It is a fact that the wounds of history haven’t healed yet but this exhibition is an attempt to give the visitors a chance to face the past. The children and grandchildren ask their parents and grand

International Day of Social Engagement (Satis Shroff) The International Day of Social Engagement was celebrated by the city administration at an event with the title ‘Citizen’s Engagement’ on December 11, 2016 at 7:30 pm in the Tanzschule Gutmann, Ball-House, Freiburg. The opening ceremony was performed by Matthias Blattmann (Tanzschule Gutmann). There were descriptions of projects, speeches and laudatios and certificates were distributed to the various project-members, and persons who distinguished themselves with exemplary work in social engagement by helping refugees, poor, roofless people in Freiburg, and even for building biking tracks so that the wanderers and bikers don’t be at loggerheads in the many woods of Freiburg’s surroundings in the Schwarzwald. Ulrich von Kirchbach, who is the mayor responsible for culture, integration, social and senior-citizens, awarded the prizes in the evening. This long event was followed by a dance-show by th

(A grieving muse at the Albert Ludwigs University) The Tsunami of Hate (Satis Shroff) An oversexed 17-year old Afghan refugee Rapes and kills his victim brutally, A pretty medical student from Freiburg. Feel sorry for the student Maria L. May her soul rest in peace. Maria helped refugees in her spare time. The DNA-evidence is established, His age needs to be verified The angry rightists have instrumentalised And blown this issue out of proportion, Though Germans commit more crimes than refugees According to statistics. An atmosphere akin to 9/11 is being created by populists: when all Muslims are thought to be terrorists. No they aren’t. In every society there are black sheep But that does not mean that all sheep are black. One hopes the political anti-refugee wave will abate And people begin to think like normal rational humans, And not get carried away by this tsunami of hate That is evident at the moment in our German society. No Volksverhetzung, please. M

European Culture: Traditional Weihnachtsmarkt in Basle (Satis Shroff) The sleek, white ICE dashes from Freiburg to Basle, Switzerland’s second biggest town on a Saturday afternoon. The day’s work is done  and you enjoy your volvic mango juice. As the train approaches the Markgräflerland, known for its vineyards, it becomes hazy. You see salad and asparagus fields covered with white plastic sheets. Along the parallel road, trucks and cars speed by. The train goes through the Katzenberg tunnel and it’s dark outside but the train is well lit. A blonde white winter cap and a red dress comes by and gives a spontaneous smile. She can’t decide where to sit in the train. Naked trees flash by as the train pulls out of the tunnel. Some trees have bird’s nests in the higher branches. Ah, you have luck and see a rabbit in the field. GE DIGITAL CAMERA Approaching Weil  am  Rhine. Cross the Rhine and you’re in Basle. Bahnbetriebswerk Haltungen says a shield. The Beatles version is much livelier and carries energy, despite the thought-provoking text. A sad song full of doubt and fear, with a plea, because she couldn't stand if it was all in vain. But that's how love is. There's no guarantee, regardless of your endearing investment. But sometimes it just happens. Es funkt. Two hearts beat in 3/4 tact, and happiness

ENGLISH SANS ENGLAND (Satis Shroff) Brexit? Ah, the Anglophobes in the European continent, especially Germans, are rubbing their hands and saying ‘Gimme Five!’ Why? You might ask. The reason is clear: to get a job in the bureaus in Brussels, you had to have English as your mother tongue because all the Eurocrats used English, making other languages useless in daily life. And now is the right time to bid the speakers of the Queen’s English goodbye since they want to cross the English Channel and turn their back on the old Continent. Achtung, halt!  What about the Maltese, the Irish Sturgeon’s Scots? The Maltese never uttered a word about an exit, and the Scots want to remain in the EU, even after the Brexit. The Scots are thrifty and clever in this respect. English is spoken in all the former British colonies along with 4,6 million Irish and 430,000 Maltese. How many people speak the Teutonic language? A good 100 million have Deutsch as their mother-tongue. German i

Swiss Book Prize 2016: ‘The Dead’ outlives Other Authors (Satis Shroff) The Swiss Book Prize (Schweizer Buchpreis) is a literary award awarded annually by a jury on behalf of the Swiss Booksellers' Association. The prize amount is CHF 30,000. The award was instituted in 2008 following the example of the German Book Prize. Only German language works of authors living in Switzerland or of Swiss nationality are eligible. This year the Prize was awarded to Christian Kracht. The winner of the Swiss Book Prize 2016 is Christian Kracht and his novel ‘Die Toten,’ the Dead. It outlived the other four novels from the Swiss short-list. The also-rans were: Sacha Batthany, Christopher Höhtker, Charles Lewinsky and Michelle Steinbeck. Three authors were really up to the mark in the battle for the Swiss Prize. Christoph Höhtker came up with a novel about Bielefeld. It made an impact on readers from Bielefeld, Germany.  The other contender was a journalist from Zurich named sa

Remembering the Fallen Soldiers

Remembering the Fallen Soldiers : On November 9, 2014 Freiburg also remembered the destruction of its Jewish Synagogue by the Nazis. It is heartening to note that the Society for Christian-Jewish Partnership, as well as Freiburg City and other organisations held a memorial event at the place where the olde synagogue stood. You could even take part in a guided-tour with the title 'The Jew.' A talk on Freiburg's Stolperstein was held by Ms. Marlies Meckel. If you come to this Schwarzwald metropolis you'll come across a lot of bronze cobbled stones with names of the Jews engraved on them. These were the Jews who once lived in Freiburg but who were murdered in the concentration camps through the use of Zyklon B, a nerve-gas, used by the Nazis. A ghastly reminder of a tragic and sad chapter in the history of Germany and this city.
